US cut rate last night

Last night when we were watching movie in the cinema, Ben Bernanke did something...

Read this morning's news:
Asia rebounds on U.S. Fed rate cut

(CNN) -- Asian stock indexes have made sharp early gains Wednesday, bouncing back from two days of big losses after a surprise steep rate cut by the U.S. Federal Reserve.

U.S. markets opened sharply down on Tuesday but fought back from the session lows after the U.S. central bank cut two key interests rate by three-quarters of a percentage point.

The Federal Reserve attempted to allay fears about the strength of the U.S. economy by trimming its key federal fund rate -- which impacts how much borrowers pay on credit card debt and loans -- from 4.25 percent to 3.5 percent.

It also lowered its discount rate -- the rate at which banks can borrow directly from the Fed from 4.75 to 4 percent.

The emergency measure was the Federal Reserve's biggest interest rate cut in since 1984.

And I just logged into my POEMS...okay...the so-called rebounce is nothing for me! Coz my stocky are still diving...my GOODNESS!

If the US government is doing one thing after the other (last friday Bush just released that what so-called package, then now again cutting the rates~!), and yet the market is still like this...recession is really already here...

What rebounce?! It's not going to last...maybe by the end of today, or tomorrow, the stocky that contributed to the so-called rebounce will dive down again!

Look at Genting International! What is it doing?!...@ 0.61?!?!

UPDATE : US recession fears create bear market for stocks, more pain seen

Venus: sweat after reading this morning note from my broker...

1/22/2008 4:29:00 PM

SINGAPORE (Thomson Financial) - Global stock markets have started 2008 on a sour note amid heightened fears that the US is headed for a recession that will dent export markets around the world and analysts are forecasting more pain to come
"The bear market has started viciously," said Gerard Minack, strategist at Morgan Stanley in Sydney

All major stock market benchmarks have fallen so far in 2008 and are expected to struggle in the first half, or at least until the world's biggest economy shows some signs of recovery. The MSCI all-country indices shows world markets have fallen about 12 percent so far this year. Most benchmarks have fallen even more sharply from the peaks hit in 2007 -- the Hang Seng, for example, is now down 30 percent from its Oct 30 peak of nearly 32,000

Technically, a bear market is considered to have begun when stocks correct more than 20 percent from a recent peak

Investors have clearly given up hopes that the US economy will pick up soon as they opted to continue selling shares even as President Bush unveiled Friday a 145 billion-dollar package to resuscitate the ailing economy. The package, while welcome, is viewed by many as too little to have an impact and too late to help the US economy avoid recession

"The odds are tilting in favor of the US economy experiencing a recession in 2008," said Tony Dolphin, London-based Director of Economics and Asset Allocation at Henderson Global Investors, in a note to clients

"The US is still the world's largest economy. If it goes into a recession in 2008, there will be a substantial slowdown in economic growth in the rest of the world," Dolphin said

While many investors believe that stock valuations look compelling as many markets have declined more than 20 percent from their peak, analysts believe it is misleading to think about valuations at this stage

"Investors need to be careful. Equity markets appear to offer good value, especially in relation to bonds, but profit margins globally are at very elevated levels and valuation measures, such as price-to-earnings ratios may be misleading," Dolphin said

"If the global economy experiences a sharp slowdown in 2008, then we can expect to see margins return to more normal levels. This would involve sizeable downgrades to earnings expectations. It is quite possible that earnings will fall for the first time since 2002," he said

Morgan Stanley's Minack said that while Asian economies may still produce decent growth rates even if the US economy slows down significantly, what investors should be watching is earnings

"If you're an investor - rather than an economist - it's really earnings decoupling, not GDP decoupling, that matters. Earnings could get hit -- say if commodity prices fall -- even if volumes expand, sustaining GDP growth," Minack said

"We have yet to see the impact of slower growth on earnings. That will come

The 'value' that may trigger a rally will, in my view, ultimately prove to be illusory," he added

Betting on Asia Notwithstanding the likelihood of earnings downgrades, Singapore-based Standard & Poor's Asian Equity research head Lorraine Tan believes that Asian companies will continue to offer investors good value

While its difficult to tell how much of the negative news has already been priced in, Tan said she believes Asian stocks are still attractive because Asian companies will continue to outpace earnings growth of their global peers

"Asian companies are in much stronger position than they were before the 1997 Asian financial crisis," Tan said

Still, Tan said she expects a challenging first half for the Asian markets given uncertainties in the US economy

Tan advises investors to avoid cyclical stocks that are susceptible to discretionary spending, particularly property developers, which have enjoyed strong demand for housing and office space in the last few years

Financial stocks are also likely to bear the brunt of selling for the time being as the subprime crisis in the US will take time to resolve

"The market is being driven by fear right now and the current fear is of a major insolvency in the US," said Andrew Pease, an investment strategist at Russell Investment Group

"There's a lot of talk about bond insurers going insolvent --- that could happen if they change the ratings of some of these portfolios that people are holding --- there's a lot issues in there in terms of how much subprime losses are to be written down," Pease said

Already, Fitch Ratings has downgraded US bond insurer Ambac and investors are bracing for further downgrades from credit rating agencies. That would mean banks would have to writedown investments in yet another asset class even as investors fear more subprime-related writedowns

"There is certainly still plenty of downside from here we think. If you think the US is going into a recession there is going to be a lot more earnings downgrades to come across Asia and market multiples can potentially go quite a bit lower from here," said Daniel McCormack, a strategist at Macquarie Securities in Hong Kong

"If the US is going into a recession, the next 3-6 months is going to be very challenging for Asian equities," he added

Morgan Stanley is advising its clients to focus on defensive sectors such as utilities and telecommunications companies

DBS Vickers Securities also believes telecommunications companies in Asia would be a good bet to hedge against the market downturn

"As the US economy navigates in troubled waters, amid the tsunami of (subprime-related) losses, Asian telcos should continue to sail smoothly in the safe domestic waters," said analysts in a note to clients

Among Asian telecom companies, DBS said companies from Singapore are the most defensive, given their strong cashflows and attractive dividend yields of as much as 7 percent. There are three telecommunications companies in Singapore, Singapore Telecommunications Ltd, StarHub Ltd, and MobileOne Ltd

Telecom companies in China and Indonesia also offer strong growth prospects, it added

Companies with high earnings visibility for the next two or three years are also attractive, said McCormack at Macquarie

One example in that category is shipyards, many of whom have full order books until 2010. The shipyard industry has benefitted from the boom in oil exploration activities brought on by the surge in crude oil prices in the past few years as well as strong demand for bigger and newer cargo ships. While demand for oil rigs and cargo ships may deteriorate in tandem with faltering US economic growth, Samsung Securities analyst PJ Yoon believes it is too early to sell shipbuilding stocks

"While we do not expect investor sentiment to improve in the near term, we do not advise taking profit on shipbuilding shares at this time, as we foresee restored order momentum from mid-February," Yoon said in a note to clients

"If economic expansion were to continue even at a snail's pace, ship owners are likely continue placing new orders -- although the order volume would vary depending on the amount and timing of vessels already ordered," Yoon said

There is also need for shipowners to renew their ageing fleet of vessels, particularly bulk carriers that transport raw materials like iron ore and coal

Other investors believe the technology sector, which has underperformed the markets last year, could also be ripe for a rebound. "High-tech stocks been especially oversold, so they have good chance of leading rebounds once sentiment in the broader market turns around," said Tsuyoshi Segawa, strategist at Shinko Securities in Tokyo.

Alan Greenspan – The age of turbulence: adventures in a new world 里第13章里 [资本主义的模式]

Alan Greenspan – The age of turbulence: adventures in a new world

Eight Items That Impact Daily Trades

There are a number of things that can impact an investor's entry (buy) into or exit (sell) out of a given stock and/or sector. Depending on the investor and his or her goals and investing time frame, the importance of timing the entry will differ. Obviously, the shorter the time frame the more important the entry; specific entries matter little to long-term (five years or more) investors.

Eight items that can materially impact the average day's trading.

1. Overseas Market/Economic Action

The US market.

2. Economic Data

Ex, Interest Rate, Exchange Rate

3. Futures Data

They start trading before the stock market and are a very good indicator of what the stock market opening will look like.

Investors should check to see if futures contracts are trading higher or lower in pre-market trading. This will give them a better feel for where the index they are tracking might be headed "after the open".

4. Buying at the Open

Buying or selling stock at the open of the market might not be a good idea.

The opening hour of trading is basically the first time that most market participants have to enter or exit the stock, which can easily produce higher-than-average trading volume. These market participants are reacting to the myriad of news stories that came out between yesterday's close and today's open, which includes major market news events like economic reports and political changes.

5. Midday Trading Lull

There is typically a drop off in trading (meaning the volume of transaction) at noon as most of the major news events are out in the market. During this lull, stock prices can often lose some ground.

When this happens, stocks can be purchased at a cheaper price at 1pm than they could at, say, 11am. Again, this is important to know, as this can affect both entry and exit points.

6. Analyst Upgrades/Downgrades

An analyst may disseminate an intraday note that can have a significant impact on a given stock and/or sector. As a tip, remember to scan financial websites or watch business reports on television.

If a large company has just been upgraded or downgraded, try to judge the potential impact on certain industries and the market as a whole.

For example, if a major semiconductor stock were downgraded by a well-known analyst due to slackening demand for that company's products, it might be reasonable to assume that other smaller players may be experiencing similar trends. It might also be logical to assume that shares of computer makers (which purchase large numbers of semiconductors) might be impacted as well.

7. Web-Related Articles

All investors should try to peruse the web and visit major news portals throughout the day, to see if there are any potentially market-moving news stories in the public domain. Be careful to avoid sites that give recommendations based on the stocks they own.

8. Friday Trading

Even if you're a "buy and hold" investor, a significant number of retail and institutional traders typically liquidate their equities on Friday (usually in the afternoon), so they don't have to hold their positions and assume risk through the weekend.

It means that stocks can and often sell off Friday afternoon during the last few hours of the trading day, if for no other reason than traders are looking to go home "flat" (without positions on their books). Keep this in mind on Fridays if you are trying to find a favorable time to enter or exit a stock position.

Bottom Line

While company-specific events can have an impact on equity prices, there are a number of other factors that can affect your shares as well. Savvy investors should be aware of them.

Consumer Confidence Index

Released by : Consumer Confidence Board
Background: The Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) is put out by The Conference Board. (There are others such as the Michigan Sentiment Index which is put out monthly by the University of Michigan).

The Consumer Confidence Survey is based on a sample of 5,000 U.S. Households and is considered one of the most accurate indicators of confidence.

It even goes as far as calculating the number of "help wanted" ads in newspapers to detect how tight the job market is.

(The Conference Board Help-Wanted Advertising Index — a key measure of job offerings in major newspapers across America )

What it means for Investors:The idea behind consumer confidence is that when the economy warrants more jobs, increased wages, and lower interest rates, it increases our confidence and spending power. Look for trend changes, many people use a moving average (3-6 months).

Should the index move above or below the moving average it is a good indication that consumer confidence is significant. Month to month changes are not considered to have as great an impact as the overall trend.

Confidence is looked at closely by the Federal Reserve when determining interest rates, which affect stock prices.

Lowering interest rates make it easier to borrow which ultimately supports consumer spending and higher confidence - something the stock markets love to hear.

Keep in mind that lowering interest rates is not an instantaneous confidence booster, it can take 6-8 months for rate cuts to work their way into the economy.

On the other hand, if confidence is rising rapidly it could trigger higher inflation.

Strengths:

the data is divided into various regions across the country therefore differences in consumer confidence according to areas has implications on residential real estate markets. if the survey reports expectations of rising wages it is an indication that the labor market is getting tighter. data is timely and considered to be a predictor of movements in the business cycle.

Weaknesses:

this is just a survey, there are no data series to take figures from. Only "planned spending" is collected rather than actual dollars spent. the CCI is also difficult to predict or forecast the future results because there are no hard figures.

It's up to him now: Ben Bernanke

持续survive the third day
Federal Reserve Chairman
Ben Bernanke

Ben Bernanke

Amateur Hour At The Fed
August 21, 2007: 08:05 PM EST

Monetary Policy: Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson says he has "great confidence" in Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and his handling of the credit panic. Wish we could say the same.

The former Ivy League professor can be expected to make some rookie mistakes after stepping into longtime chief Alan Greenspan's shoes. But has he learned from them?

Rewind to March. In testimony before Congress, Bernanke insisted the damage to the markets and economy was "contained" within the subprime mortgage sector. "At this juncture," he intoned, "the impact on the broader economy and financial markets of the problems in the subprime market seems likely to be contained."

In fact, it had spread like wildfire. By August, investors had learned that Alt-A mortgage lenders, investment banks and even foreign mutual funds had been exposed to the subprime rot.

On Aug. 7, with Wall Street in turmoil, the Bernanke Fed met and acknowledged the crisis. "Nevertheless," it said in a statement, "the economy seems likely to continue to expand at a moderate pace."

So it stubbornly kept interest rates tight, against the better advice of many (including this paper).

Two days later, a reporter asked President Bush about the market meltdown. "I am told there is enough liquidity in the system to enable markets to correct," he said.

He was told wrong. Stocks tanked the very next day, forcing Bernanke to pump some $40 billion into the very system he apparently had assured Bush had plenty of liquidity. He since has injected $60billion more in liquidity.

But the bad news just kept coming. So last week, Bernanke took the rare action of lowering interest rates between meetings. It appeared he finally had seen the error of his ways. After months of assurances that the subprime rot was contained and underestimating the liquidity needs of investors, he finally abandoned his academic models and faced up to the reality on the street.

"Financial market conditions have deteriorated, and tighter credit conditions and increased uncertainty have the potential to restrain economic growth going forward," the Fed said Aug. 17 in a statement. "The downside risks to growth have increased appreciably."

Only, the about-face didn't come with a cut in the federal funds rate -- the Fed's benchmark rate. Bernanke instead cut the discount rate, a largely symbolic move.

Banks only go to the discount window in emergencies -- when they can't get overnight loans from other banks charging the fed funds rate. Very few dollars are lent through the discount window.

It's almost as if Bernanke doesn't want to admit he was wrong not to lower the fed funds rate on Aug. 7, when he had a chance.

Whatever his reasons, the coy discount-rate move didn't calm market fears. It may no be enough to avert a recession.

There are signs the mortgage meltdown is bleeding into the economy. Payroll job growth is slowing. This week, Capital One Financial Corp. (NYSE:COF) announced it would slash 2,000 jobs.

Bernanke is paid to read the tea leaves. Can he not see that the subprime debacle is only the tip of the iceberg?

Trillions of dollars worth of adjustable-rate mortgages will reset in the next few years (see chart). Falling home prices across the country will make it harder for borrowers to refinance. Foreclosures surged 93% in June from a year earlier, hitting a record high.

The wave of resets could kill consumer spending -- and economic growth -- if the Fed doesn't pre-empt the looming disaster with a 50-basis-point cut in the fed funds rate.

It should act now and not wait until next month's meeting.

picture taken from http://www.artshole.co.uk/arts/artists/Stacey%20Whitaker/Wall-Street---New-York-2004.jpg
Fed cuts discount rate!

Fox business

说是volatility will continue for a couple of weeks, or even months...

200-day EMA

There was a one hour interview on CNBC with Warren Buffet, the second richest man who has donated $31 billion to charity.

Here are some very interesting aspects of his life:

1. He bought his first share at age 11 and he now regrets that he started too late!

2. He bought a small farm at age 14 with savings from delivering newspapers.

3. He still lives in the same small 3-bedroom house in mid-town Omaha, that he bought after he got married 50 years ago. He says that he has everything he needs in that house. His house does not have a wall or a fence.

4. He drives his own car everywhere and does not have a driver or security people around him.

5. He never travels by private jet, although he owns the world's largest private jet company.

6. His company, Berkshire Hathaway, owns 63 companies. He writes only one letter each year to the CEOs of these companies, giving them goals for the year. He never holds meetings or calls them on a regular basis. He has given his CEO's only two rules.
Rule number 1: do not lose any of your share holder's money.
Rule number 2: Do not forget rule number 1.

7. He does not socialize with the high society crowd. His past time after he gets home is to make himself some pop corn and watch Television.

8. Bill Gates, the world's richest man met him for the first time only 5 years ago. Bill Gates did not think he had anything in common with Warren Buffet. So he had scheduled his meeting only for half hour. But when Gates met him, the meeting lasted for ten hours and Bill Gates became a devotee of Warren Buffet.

9. Warren Buffet does not carry a cell phone, nor has a computer on his desk.

His advice to young people: "Stay away from credit cards and invest in yourself and

Remember:
A. Money doesn't create man but it is the man who created money.
B. Live your life as simple as you are.
C. Don't do what others say, just listen them, but do what you feel good.
D. Don't go on brand name; just wear those things in which u feel comfortable.
E. Don't waste your money on unnecessary things; just spend on them who really in need rather.
F. After all it's your life then why give chance to others to rule our life."
